Yes, you read that right—”The Villain’s Guide to Being a Hero.” So, what’s that, you ask? I’ll tell you what it is. It’s the next great chapter in the Hero’s Guide saga! Admittedly, it is a relatively short chapter. Not a full novel. Just a short story. BUT! It is a true sequel to The Hero’s Guide to Being an Outlaw and it puts the spotlight on a much beloved (or perhaps be-hated) member of the Hero’s Guide cast. Who? Well, you’ll have to read the story to find out! Or just wait long enough until someone posts a spoiler.

But, Mr. H, you ask. Where can I find this amazing new chapter in the ongoing adventures of my favorite fantasy folk? I’ll tell you where! You will find “The Villain’s Guide to Being a Hero” in Heroes & Villains, the 7th volume of Jon “Stinky Cheese Man” Scieszka’s Guys Read anthology series, which comes out on April 4th! The story will be right in there along with tales by some other writerly folks you might have heard of, like Sharon Creech, Jack Gantos, Laurie Halse Anderson, Ingrid Law, Eugene Yelchin, Pam Muñoz Ryan, Deborah Hopkinson, Cathy Camper, Raúl Gonzalez, and Lemony Snicket. Feel free to pre-order. 🙂

  1. Mr. Healy, just dropping a note how much I love your Hero’s Guide books. Looking forward to the next one! My guess is that the short story is about my favorite bratty bandit, Deeb Rauber. Thanks for writing these hilarious books that can be enjoyed by both children and adults!

      1. Haha. I do really hope its about Deebie. I don´t know why, but I actually think he´s cute. (I know, right?) And he´s my favourite character.

  2. But will there be a true fourth book to the Hero’s Guide series? I’ve been waiting and hoping for one ever since the third one came out. It’s probably the best series I think I’ve ever read and sincerely hope you will do another.

        1. I’m thinking the next book will take place in the Thirteen Kingdoms. And it will feature some famous fairy tale characters. And most likely there will be some swords in there somewhere. But seriously, I have more than just an inkling of what the next book would be about. I just can’t tell you yet. (Sorry!)

  3. Hi! Any chance you could get Bronson Pinchot to record the Short Story?? My family absolutely LOVES his narration of the first 3 books!
