Strap yourselves in tight! To what? I don’t know. But strap yourselves to something! Because A Perilous Journey of Danger & Mayhem will begin on September 25th, 2018! There’s going to be plenty of danger! And mayhem! And peril. And… journeying. Yes, all that stuff and more! Book 1 is called A Dastardly Plot—which is perfect, because what better way to begin a perilous journey than with a dastardly plot? The first volume of this epic new trilogy hits bookshelves on 9/25, but you can pre-order it now! Just look at that awesome cover with all its danger and mayhem! See those people in that balloon thingy? What are they doing? That’s dangerous! And check out all those firework explosions going on all around them! Total mayhem, am I right? And is that a tiny person standing on top of the Brooklyn Bridge in the middle of all that? That person shouldn’t be there! Totally dangerous! And what’s up with those sparks by the title? They look dangerous. Wow, my heart is racing from the cover alone! Whew. I need a rest.

Okay, close your eyes and imagine some trumpet fanfare. Now open them so you can keep reading. Ha! Caught you! You weren’t following my instructions, otherwise how would you have read the direction to open your eyes?! But I digress… Okay, do the trumpet thing again, but with your eyes open. Dah-dah-dah-DAH!

Why all the fanfare, you ask? Because I’m announcing my very first picture book: This is Not That Kind of Book!

What kind of book, you ask? Not that kind. What kind? Whatever kind you’re thinking of.

This is Not That Kind of Book will be illustrated by Ben Mantle, the guy who drew the pictures for this book:

And this book: Pretty nice, right? If you want to find out more information, try going to the Upcoming Titles page on this site. Maybe you’ll find some there, maybe you won’t. I’m just that kind of guy.

Those of you who have visited this site before might realize that I’ve made a little update to the “Books” pages. The “Worst Thing About Saving the World” page has been replaced by the “Upcoming Titles” page, which has info on The Worst Thing About Saving the World as well as the book, Perilous Journey, which will be coming out next year—before The Worst Thing About Saving the World. The “Upcoming Titles” page also explains (since so many of you have asked… and asked… and asked…) why Perilous Journey will be coming out before The Worst Thing About Saving the World. I’ve also gotten rid of that cheesy, old-computer-font placeholder image that many of you seemed to hate so much. I think the whole page looks much nicer now, really. So thank you for complaining. The important thing, though, is that I have a new book coming out next year! So be prepared for many months of teasers, trailers, and tempting tidbits about Perilous Journey coming your way on this very site. Excelsior!

This fake cover is kaput.

Yes, you read that right—”The Villain’s Guide to Being a Hero.” So, what’s that, you ask? I’ll tell you what it is. It’s the next great chapter in the Hero’s Guide saga! Admittedly, it is a relatively short chapter. Not a full novel. Just a short story. BUT! It is a true sequel to The Hero’s Guide to Being an Outlaw and it puts the spotlight on a much beloved (or perhaps be-hated) member of the Hero’s Guide cast. Who? Well, you’ll have to read the story to find out! Or just wait long enough until someone posts a spoiler.

But, Mr. H, you ask. Where can I find this amazing new chapter in the ongoing adventures of my favorite fantasy folk? I’ll tell you where! You will find “The Villain’s Guide to Being a Hero” in Heroes & Villains, the 7th volume of Jon “Stinky Cheese Man” Scieszka’s Guys Read anthology series, which comes out on April 4th! The story will be right in there along with tales by some other writerly folks you might have heard of, like Sharon Creech, Jack Gantos, Laurie Halse Anderson, Ingrid Law, Eugene Yelchin, Pam Muñoz Ryan, Deborah Hopkinson, Cathy Camper, Raúl Gonzalez, and Lemony Snicket. Feel free to pre-order. 🙂

So, this contest proved to be a little on the difficult side. Sorry about that. Thank you so much to everyone who took a stab at the answers… And congratulations to Marci Stevenson and Max Teff, the only two people who got them all correct! Marci and Max each have a signed book on the way. For those of you who came close and want to see what you missed, or those of you who came too late to enter and want to see if you might have stood a shot at winning, I’m moving this desk pic over to its own page—complete with the answers! So to find out just what is on my desk, click the pic below. Have fun!

Contest #3 will be coming soon. (Yes, I know I have a loose definition of the word “soon,” but I promise it will be before summer.)

Pop Culture Desk

Hey, remember that contest I said was coming in November? Well, it must be November, because it’s finally here! (Actually, it’s January–please don’t mistake this for an old post and skip reading it). So…

It’s time for CONTEST #2: What’s on My Desk? Can you name every book, movie, TV show, video game, comic book, or other piece of pop culture that appears in this photo of my actual desk? (Go to the Contests page for the full story, the rules, and a much better version of the photo so you won’t have to squint so hard.)

Pop Culture Desk

The folks over at Walden Media (Walden Pond Press’s film branch) have just launched a new website called WaldenTV. And one of their first projects is a great little live-action short that depicts the prologue from The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom. Watch it below. And if you like it, please spread the word! Link to it on your own sites and blogs. Teachers and librarians, feel free to show the video to classes! And don’t forget to pop over to WaldenTV for more fun videos.

Hey, look at you, scrolling all the way down to the bottom! Good for you! Congratulations on being so thorough!
